Progress in June

I’m having fun working on small projects and getting things done.

First, I made myself this patriotic mini quilt entirely from the scrap basket.

The fun thing about scrappy quilts is remembering the projects  where you used those particular fabrics before. There is a scrap from my first grandson’s baby quilt, a piece from the last quilt I made for my Mama, and scraps from other quilts I’ve made.

I just realized that everything in the above photo came from thrift stores, except for the cross on the wall. I love it all.

A better photo of the shelves with my favorite Amish girl, purchased over 25 years ago from a local crafter. I have cookbooks on the bottom two shelves.

A close up view before the little quilt was finished.

Remember the scrap gingham rag ball I made? šŸ¤£ Here it is again! I also cross stitched this little patriotic piece and made a little pillow.

I only did the top part of this free pattern from Plum Street Samplers. The fabric I used was horrible to work with and I used the wrong color for the shirt. So I went back and stitched over instead of removing the wrong thread. I did not enjoy it, so I got to a stopping point and called it a day. I do want to attempt this pattern again—it’s called Happy Birthday, Mr.President — in honor of George Washington’s Birthday.

I promised not to show this again until it was framed.

I studied up on how to frame it.

And I did it!! Is it perfect? No! But I love it and saved a lot of $ by framing it myself. I ordered a custom sized frame from USArt online. The 1978 stamped kit was a vintage find on EBay and I enjoyed every minute of stitching this piece. My grandson, Chandler, stitched the “h” in “The Lord...”

Ok this part is cheesy, but thought I’d share in case you have something like this in your closet. I like the skirt part of this dress, but the top was too big and

So I cut off the top above the drawstring waist. Knit doesn’t fray, so no sewing needed.

I think I created my favorite summer skirt. Have you ever cut an outfit in half before? Maybe you have something in your closet you can reinvent. šŸ™ƒšŸ™ƒšŸ™ƒ

  1. Love that sweet mini! So fun for the summer--and the patriotic cross-stitch, too. Would never have known it was only half the pattern.
Excellent framing job on the sampler. You did well!
I have occasionally reconstructed a piece of clothing. But I haven't done exactly what you have done. Once I had a favorite paisley skirt. One day in a thrift store I found a long-sleeved blouse in the same fabric, but it was a few sizes too large. I bought it, took it apart, and remade it into a short sleeved shell top that worked great with the skirt for summer, and in cold weather I just added a solid colored sweater or jacket in a matching color.

    1. I don’t think my sewing skills could make a new blouse, but it would be fun to try!

  3. You have been busy with pretty stitching projects. Your patriotic mini quilt is lovely. Lovely too that the fabrics in this quilt remind you of other pretties you have made in previous times. You did a great job with the framing of the 23rd Psalm. It looks fabulous in the frame. Isn't it fun when you give new life to an article of clothing that has been hanging in the wardrobe for a very long time. Your 'new' skirt looks great.

  6. I love your little patriotic mini quilt! Looks like you have a great display spot for it. Great idea to remake the dress into a skirt, too. After I retired from teaching, I took a denim "teacher" jumper and turned it into a tote bag that I used for a long time. It's a good feeling to repurpose something you might have just thrown away!

  8. It's lovely to see what's on your shelves! I think you did a great job framing your project. And cutting the top off your dress was a good idea. I've don't think I've done that to clothes but yesterday I sliced a chunk off an old duvet, stitched it closed and am in the process of doing the same to the cover so the dog can have a new bed!

  10. Beautiful decorations and stitching. I have used a button down shirt, and added a skirt to it before.

  11. Clever you on reusing that dress and making it into a skirt. Yes, I have done that too, in my case the top of the dress was too tight so chopped it off, added an elastic waist band and hey presto, a new summer skirt.

  12. I've cut the bottom off a couple of dresses. One had a bodice that didn't fit properly, and I think I stained the top of the other dress or something like that. I actually liked the skirts better.
