Moving along...

Things are moving along for us here in our "real" home. We had our appraisal done last week and were very pleased with the results. Yesterday we received estimates from moving companies for the big moving day. Funny thing is: We are walking around with Mr. Mover and telling him what things are NOT going.... like the livingroom set, son's bedroom set, diningroom set, a chair here and there... the nicer things that we own. The guys look a little puzzled when we tell them what we ARE moving.... junk. You know, all those boxes of stuff that you've saved forever, and don't really know why, but it's stuff you can't part with. I have my children's toy furniture in the attic.... in need of repair... and Mr. Mover sticks his head down from the attic and says "Are you moving THIS?" Yes. Then he looks at some old dishes sitting off to the side that obviously have not been used in years. Are you taking THESE? Yes. Then two old pink rockers with peeling paint from a front porch many years ago? Do you want to keep THESE? Yes. I had to giggle about what he must have been thinking: She's nuts; she is keeping the junk and sending the good stuff away. But I have dreams... big dreams. Hubby and I plan to start fresh in our next home....with new stuff.... with all the old JUNK still packed away in the attic. Not junk.... many years of memories. One day I will restore those old pink rockers, which by the way, I have many pictures of my little children rocking in years ago on the front porch. I will restore those rockers and use them again. Those dishes.... maybe they are valuable by now???? The kids furniture... my grandchildren will use to have tea parties, rock their baby dolls, and I will restore the baby doll bunk beds for my granddaughters. My daddy made these bunkbeds for my daughter. I will make bed linens and quilts for their little dolls. So, while others may think my stuff is junk.... these things are very valuable to me and the movers had better take very good care of them. Well, off to packing boxes today... my dear son will be moving out this weekend into their new home... one week before their wedding. Yes, things are moving along here.

  1. I don't care to see another empty box as long as I live... After, that is, I unpack all of those full one's I have, going to our new home tomorrow! Goodness, things ARE moving along!

  5. Hi Mommy - I remember the wonderful bunk beds. Duncan slept there many a night/day/afternoon. Well, I dread the moving for you. I hated moving my stuff 25 minutes down the road. lol. And I STILL have stuff I have to move - I think I'll stop by Sunday and pick up some of my things to bring home.

  6. PEN PEN,
If you ask me I think you are packing all the right things, sounds good to me. The mover just doesn't understand these things.
Yes be careful about getting used to not going to work, its a pretty easy way of life to fall into to.
That little Mary box was a very good deal, and I think a quilt with embroidered sayings would be really nice.

  8. Ah a girl after my own heart - You know what's important to move - Mr. Mover is missing out. Hopefully, MRS. Mover will hold his dear memories! There is no "shopping" for thoughts and feelings these pieces will give you. Enjoy them and your grandchildren will treasure them (and YOU) forever!

  9. PenPen, I totally understand. You make me emotional just thinking about all the stuff in my attic. It looks like "Toys R Us". A lot of it is already no good. But some of it is.... Metal Tonka Trucks, Porceline Dolls, several children's rocking chairs, a 2 year old's bike... Those movers are packing up your dreams and memories, very valuable stuff!

    Congratulations to your son too!

Your life has certainly changed completely since I've known you.

You are blooming where you are planted rather well, I think.

  11. Wow!! You are really busy! Lots of stuff happening! I just read your post on doing your son's laundry for the last time and I got a bit emotional myself. Goose is not even 9 months old and I am already feeling sad about the days when he is all grown up. I suppose it is a gradual transition, but I couldn't help but get a little choked up thinking about it! GOod for you quitting your job if it wasn't working for you. Life is too short to spend it working long hours and driving all over the place. :)

  12. I understand what your talking about. I don't care about the furniture, but don't mess with the memories tucked safely away in those boxes. Sounds like a fresh start is waiting down the road.

  14. I am a firm believer that there is a distinct difference between JUNK and JUNQUE. Junk is what we piled into a 20 yard dumpster. Junque encompasses those things that we treasure, the things memories are made of or in the case of a junque connoisseur as myself - those items which others may consider junk that I can bring home and turn into junque. Mr. Mover evidently hasn't taken that class yet in the Moving Man's Guide to Recognizing Precious Treasures Course! You might want to suggest that to him the next time you meet! Oh, and throwing in the occasional "you know the appraiser from the Antiques Road Show said we may want to be extra careful with those _______ because they have an insurable value of $$$$$$$$" could possibly lead to the use of an extra layer or two of bubble wrap by Mr. Mover!

    Good luck with the move!

    Blessings!
